Bangkok's Michelin-starred Raan Jay Fai investigated for charging tourist S$160 for crab omelette listed as S$60 on menu The S$160 version used superior crab meat, but the customer wasn't informed beforehand. Bangkok's popular Michelin-starred eatery Raan Jay Fai, famous for its fluffy crab omelette, has come under fire after a London-based Thai YouTuber alleged that she was charged 4,000 baht (S$160) for a signature dish. The controversy caught the attention of the Thai government and its Commerce Minister has since ordered an investigation into the incident. Complaint YouTuber Peachii, with 1.6 million followers on the video platform, posted on X on Aug. 15 about her experience at Raan Jay Fai. According to The Nation, the content creator wrote that she ordered Jay Fai's renowned crab omelette with a menu price of 1,500 baht (S$60). When the bill came, she was shocked to learn that she had been charged 4,000 baht (S$160) instead. Delicious but didn't ask for more expensive version She wrote that while the crab omelette was delicious, the issue was that she neither ordered a special version nor was she told in advance about the higher price tag. On the menu, the dish she ordered was priced at 1,500 baht (S$60). She questioned why the chef could change the ingredient as they wished and later charge the customer for more than what was listed on the menu. The Nation reported that the content creator checked with the restaurant's staff on the discrepancy, but was told that the larger-than-expected bill was due to the use of superior-quality crab. Following the series of posts, which have been viewed more than 20 million times on X, similar sentiments were shared by commenters. Some agreed that the restaurant ought to keep customers informed in advance before charging higher prices, while others wondered why an omelette dish came with such a high price tag when it could easily be made at home, The Nation reported. Government looking into it On Monday (Aug. 18), Thailand's Minister of Commerce Jatuporn Buruspat ordered Thailand's Department of Internal Trade to look into whether the Michelin-starred establishment had illegally overcharged. Restaurants could be fined up to 10,000 baht for overcharging, and another 10,000 baht for failing to display the correct prices, Bangkok Post reported. "Businesses can only be sustainable if patrons trust the shops. If consumer feel the prices do not match the menu, they will lose confidence in the business," the minister said, as quoted in The Nation. Government officials visited Raan Jay Fai on Aug. 18 in an attempt to conduct its investigation, but the restaurant was closed. Raan Jay Fai earned in its Michelin star in 2018. It has been visited by celebrities such as Jack Ma, Ed Sheeran, and Lisa from Blackpink. The restaurant is named after its chef, Jay Fai, who has become an icon herself. She's usually seen behind the wok wearing a beanie, goggles and a pair of blue gloves. Related story Top image via @jayfaibangkok / Instagram
