Paralympic gold medallists to get less after sponsor withdrawal

KUALA LUMPUR: The Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) has revealed that medallists from last year'swill still receive incentives — but not the RM60,000 for gold that was initially promised — after one of the sponsors pulled out.
A media report from August last year quoted PCM president Datuk Seri Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin as saying that gold medallists would receive RM60,000, funded by three companies pledging RM20,000 each.
However, PCM secretary-general Datuk Subramaniam Raman Nair said the amount will now be lower.
"To be clear, the incentives are not directly from PCM but from sponsors we approached," Subramaniam told Timesport on Monday.
"There were initially three companies who agreed to sponsor the incentives for the Paris Paralympics.
"Unfortunately, one of them has withdrawn as they are facing financial issues.
"Another company has already paid out RM10,000 to each gold medallist, RM5,000 to each silver medallist and RM3,000 to each bronze medallist. This was done back in April.
"The other company, which is a foreign firm, will pay RM15,000 to gold medallists, RM10,000 to silver medallists and RM5,000 to bronze medallists.
"This will be done on Thursday during an event at the Paralympic Centre of Excellence in Kampung Pandan.
"The delay was because the company's boss wanted to be present but had not been able to find a suitable date to travel to Malaysia.
"This had already been explained to the athletes during the first incentive presentation in April.
"We have now asked the company for permission to go ahead with the event as this has become an issue here."
National para shuttler Cheah Liek Hou, who won gold in Paris, had voiced his frustration over the payment delay in a recent social media post.
Powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin also won gold, while track and field trio Latif Romly and Ziyad Zolkefli (silver) and Eddy Bernard (bronze) contributed to Malaysia's medal tally.
A dejected Subramaniam said PCM cannot legally hold sponsors accountable if they fail to deliver.
"These companies do not have any contractual obligations with us and there is not much we can do if they withdraw or pay a lower amount," he said.
"We hope everyone understands that this is our own initiative to find additional incentives for our athletes, on top of what they receive from the government via the National Sports Incentive Scheme (Shakam)."
Subramaniam said PCM has already clarified the matter with Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.
Olympic and Paralympic medallists receive RM1 million (gold), RM300,000 (silver) and RM100,000 (bronze) via Shakam.

Their local companies no money donate meh need foreign companies donate?
I thinking they see the person can do much advisement for the sponsorship so cut 😀 Its a very true factor also
